Dunedin, Florida: Downtown Night Walk: SunTrust Bank

Dunedin, Florida: Downtown Night Walk: SunTrust Bank On a recent Night Walk through Downtown Dunedin, I was struck by the bold colors in this SunTrust sign. By day a bland symbol of American banking dogma, at night, a beacon of color in the black void that is after dark.

Eh? Yeah, anyway, I like the way the colors really pop at night, in the dark. Yeah, that's pretty much it. Now that I think of it, I will have to check out some of the other big banks around here, like Bank Of America, Wachovia, AmSouth, etc., to see if they have signs that POP at night...

Dunedin, Florida: Night Life Scene At Skip's Bar & Grill

Dunedin, Florida: Night Life Scene At Skip's Bar & Grill I've seen Skip's plenty of times during the day, when it looks like it is sleeping. But only rarely have I had an opportunity to check out the night life. Sadly, when I took this picture, I wasn't able to stop and enjoy it either. But I did enjoy taking the snap.

From what I hear about Skips', it's a great 'neighborhood' kind of hang out. You can relax, have a drink, enjoy the night air, enjoy your friends, and enjoy the strangers around you who are slowly becoming friends. Sounds pretty cool, eh? Corner of Main and Douglas in Downtown Dunedin.

Dunedin, Florida: Make Way For Ducklings!

Dunedin, Florida: Make Way For Ducklings! When I was a child, I loved a book called "Make Way For Ducklings!" It was a wonderfully enchanting book written by Robert McCloskey in 1941. It has since sold over 2 million copies!

So when I saw this lineup, I could not resist the shot, nor the flashback to that wonderful book. And I must congratulate Ms. Muscovy on bringing this many of her brood to this age. I hate to say it, but the area is not conducive to the maturing of all ducklings hatched in each sitting.

Dunedin, Florida: Purple Heart Park Clock

Dunedin, Florida: Purple Heart Park Clock I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry! I did not even know there was such a place as Purple Heart Park here in Dunedin. And yet, I have now taken a picture, at 9:28 PM, of a clock that proves there is such a place. Well, at least as far as it has it written above the face of the clock!

But please don't ask me about the park. I was so focused on the clock, and it was rather dark at that hour, that I really did not see much of the rest of the park. But I will keep my eyes open for it next time.

Dunedin, Florida: Island Check: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Project

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Island Check: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Project Here we see the last of the three floating islands installed in December 2007 by a local Boy Scouts troop working on an Eagle Scout project. As I mentioned earlier, the islands have come a long way since they were first floated out onto the lake.

It's pretty impressive in a lot of ways. I can just imagine what they might look like in a few years. It hasn't been 12 months yet, and they look great. Perhaps, they will fill in around the edges where many plants were lost in the first few months. I have seen ducks and other water birds wandering around the 'interiors' of the islands, so I won't be surprised if they start building nests out there.

Dunedin, Florida: Floating Islands Revisited: Boy Scout Project

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Floating Islands Revisited: Boy Scout Project I cannot deny the skepticism I felt when I first saw these islands floated on Lake Paloma by the Boy Scouts working on an Eagle Scout project. And in the first few months, it seemed like they were coming apart more than growing into their new surroundings.

But I am happy to report, with photographic evidence, that they seem to be growing quite successfully into islands that actually support wildlife. I'm happy to see it, as I think it adds that much more interest and wildlife diversity to what might otherwise be just another drainage pond. Check out the original posts that chronicled the Eagle Scout project that put these islands here.
