Dunedin, Florida: Hammock Park Butterfly Garden On Warm Sunny Day

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Hammock Park Butterfly Garden On Warm Sunny Day Well, let's face it, it's cold outside right about now. I mean, not just a little chilly. I get that. But right now it's cold out there. So I choose denial at the moment, and I post this picture of a moment in time that was much, much warmer. It's 43 and dropping as I write this. Meanwhile, this photograph was taken on a warm sunny day when the temperature was more like 85 degrees and rising.

So I present a picture of the Butterfly Garden at Hammock Park, in Dunedin, Florida. A picture taken earlier in the year, showing how beautiful Dunedin can be, especially in her parks, and how warm and sunny the weather is here most of the year.

Dunedin, Florida: Hammock Park Boardwalk Sunny Day Summer Reminder

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Hammock Park Boardwalk Sunny Day Summer Reminder It's 44 degrees outside right now, and the wind is blowing like crazy! This is not at ALL Florida! :) I took this picture earlier in the year, and it seems like this might be a good time to post it. Just a warming reminder of warmer times and calmer weather.

This shot is of the boardwalk at my favorite local Dunedin city park, Hammock Park. It's a beautiful park right near downtown. Which means it's close enough to where I work that I can get there at lunchtime for a nice relaxing walk. On a day like today, however, I kept my walk to the few blocks close to work, so I wouldn't get too terribly chilled before I got back to the office. I know lots of you out there are lots colder, but the predicted 30's for tonight are really cold for this area. Keep warm folks!

Dunedin, Florida: Millions Flock To Awesome Antiques Festival In Downtown Dunedin

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Millions Flock To Awesome Antiques Festival In Downtown Dunedin Okay, okay, that was another outrageous lie. There were not millions of people there. Heck, I doubt there were more than a thousand or two. But it really was quite enjoyable. At least, for most of us...

"...Richard wandered through the crowds of happy antiques shoppers, scanning the faces of every person he passed, as well as the inventories of each table. "It has to be here," he muttered to himself. And if it isn't, he thought, surely THEY must be here. One or the other, he calculated, one or the other would be here, if not both.

He would not rest until he found them. It was HIS turn now, it was HIS time for revenge, time to even the score, time to make that one superb snatch that would set him up for years to come.

Suddenly, he heard a familiar voice near the tables in a small courtyard to his left. His heart jumped for just a moment, and he nonchalantly veered into the area. As he came closer to the voice, he fingered the small revolver in his pocket..."

Dunedin, Florida: Things Done Right: Merchants Map

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Things Done Right: Merchants Map I know I've said it before, and I am sure I will say it again... The City of Dunedin really does it right! This sign, standing near the main walk-in gate at Knology Park baseball field, has a map on either side, just like this, together with a listing of Downtown Dunedin Merchants below it, indexed to the map. Pretty cool.

Now, I have to admit, it is possible that the sign is not the work of the City, but of the local Merchants Association. If that is the case, then kudos to them! However, I stand by my assertion that the City of Dunedin gets it right! (NO, not all the time, and NO, not all things... but enough... enough)

Dunedin, Florida: Knology Park: Spring Training Toronto Blue Jays: Dunedin Blue Jays A quiet day at Knology Park in Dunedin. Once called Dunedin Stadium, Knology Park replaced the very old Grant Field, which dated back to 1930, according to Ballpark Digest. Now it is home to both the Toronto Blue Jays spring training camp AND the Dunedin Blue Jays!

Dunedin, Florida: City Of Dunedin, City Hall

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: City Of Dunedin, City Hall I guess you could say this is the heart of the City of Dunedin. City Hall, the one and only. Cool. It's really a pretty nice looking place. I LOVE the tree out front... way cool.

I have to give them credit... it's not some overdone palace of waste. They seem to run a really nice City, providing a nice place to live and work and play.

Dunedin, Florida: It's All About Control

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: It's All About Control: Waste Water Pump Station Like yesterday's image, this one is all about control. The railings in yesterday's post were there to control where we humans walk. The machinery in this post are there to control the water that carries our waste.

It's nice that the City Of Dunedin paints them a subtle green. I just don't think it would be as pleasing if they painted them brown!

Dunedin, Florida: 17th Annual Mardi Gras 2008 III

Click for larger picture in a new window
HATS!-II Dunedin, Florida: 17th Annual Mardi Gras 2008 Welcome back to Hats of Mardi Gras 2008 - Dunedin, Florida.

Now there is a man with a hat! That is a hat to be reckoned with. Funny thing, while I thought I was focusing on HIS hat, my camera seemed to focus on HER straps! What a collection of straps it is too! Later, when I was able to examine the image more closely, I realized that the lady also had a hat to be reckoned with! Can you see the name at the bottom? Click to enlarge if it helps.

As promised, here are some more pictures of the crowd and the fun and the food booths and so on and so on and so on. (Be sure to click on the small photos to see larger images in a new window.)

About the smaller photos below:
My what a fine collection of pretty's, eh? But not to touch, no, not to touch. These are simply for display.(top left). Get your t-shirts, they're really cool. You went to Mardi Gras, your nobody's fool! (top right).

Anyone hungry? There's plenty of food. But cut in line, and you might get BOO'd! If you notice the couple in green and purple shirts, toward the back of this shot, they seemed to have a lot of fun dancing to the live music later. He's a light-pole kind of dancer... standing still with his arm held out high, while she holds onto his hand and twirls and dances under his arm. (bottom left). "Are you lookin' at me? Are you lookin' at me? Are you takin' a picture? Don't let me wife see!" (bottom right).

Dunedin, Florida: Mardi Gras Fat Tuesday

Happy Waitangi Day to all my good friends from New Zealand who sometimes land here looking for Dunedin, New Zealand. Thanks for visiting, even if it was by accident! :)

Waitangi Day, according to a New Zealand Government site I found, is "a day set aside by the New Zealand Government as a 'public holiday' to be observed throughout the country as a 'national day of thanksgiving in commemoration of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi’ in 1840 between Mäori and the British Crown". Click the following links for more information about Waitangi Day: Wiki, Waitangi.com, Govt.NZ.

Meanwhile, in Dunedin, FL, USA... Can you say MARDI GRAS!?!?!?!?!
Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Mardi Gras Fat Tuesday That's right, Tuesday was Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras, in Dunedin's Downtown District. The Downtown Merchants Association sponsored a wonderful evening of festivities with fun, and strange sights, for all. And because I am sure they were part of making this happen, thanks to the City of Dunedin too. I had a chance to stroll the sidewalks with my camera, in the early part of the evening, before the light was too little, and the festivities too much. Let me just say, I think maybe Mardi Gras means: Night Of A Thousand Strange People! :D

So, here is the first crop of fun photos of people having a good time. Of course, the couple dancing above might have been having more fun than most. But they were also making it that much more fun for the rest of us. In the next two or three posts, I will show you more of the sights and fun that were to be had this evening. I hope you enjoy the show. (Be sure to click on the small photos to see larger images in a new window)

Below, you can see the live entertainment and sidewalk dining at Bellini Restaurant (top left). There was also an excellent group playing at La Maison Gourmet restaurant (top right). Dunedin Fire Rescue were out in force. Hey, it's a small town, right, so why not a small ambulance? (bottom left). Sitrling Winery's street front bar would be doing a brisk business as the evening wore on. In the right foreground you can see a good example of BEADS GONE WILD (bottom right).

Dunedin, Florida: City Daily Photo Theme Day!

Dunedin, Florida: City Of Dunedin Pipe Band Kilts Bagpipes It's for real! The City of Dunedin Pipe Band is the real deal. And what a sound! I was fortunate to catch this group practicing near City Hall on a recent weekend. So I was able to take a more informal photo of them. It is an amazing thing to see and hear a real live, seriously competent Pipe Band. If you get the chance, don't miss it!

Dunedin, Florida: The Welcome To Dunedin Sign

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: The Welcome To Dunedin Sign I was so surprised and chagrined to realize that after 70 posts, I still had not posted a picture of this sign. You can find these signs in a number of places around Dunedin, at the edges, I should say. You can see the Christmas decorations on this one still.

This is just another thing that the City of Dunedin has done so well. They have branded this little city, in a way. Around here, when you see this sign, even if the lettering were gone, you would know it was the Welcome To Dunedin sign. Pretty nice work if you ask me.

And speaking of things the City of Dunedin has done right... Dunedin’s Fifth Annual Diverse-City Week kicks off with a full day of events on Saturday, January 19th. They really put on quite a few Diversity events. Click here to get more information from the City of Dunedin website. While you are there, scroll down a little further for information on a free Sustainability seminar on Energy Conservation.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Dunedin, Florida: Theme Day: Best Photo of 2007

Click for larger picture in a new window
HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Dunedin, Florida: Theme Day: Best Photo of 2007: Downtown - Christmas Celebration This picture says a lot about Dunedin. Such a wonderful small town atmosphere, and yet not so small that they can't put on a wonderful wing-ding like this Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration. It was a great time, and I can't wait to see what they do next year. Everyone seemed so friendly and outgoing that night. It was wonderful, and all amidst the neat little shops of that awesome downtown that the City of Dunedin has managed to preserve. What's not to love? :D

May 2008 be a year of love and joy and prosperity for you and all your loved ones!

Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt VIII

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt VIII Welcome to Turtle Island! No, probably not a fair name, and certainly not democratically selected, but I like it. As I approached the edge of Lake Paloma today, I counted at least 8 turtles sunning themselves. Not bad. In addition, I have seen as many as 4 long legged wading birds out there at one time. Cool. The turtles seem to be of maybe three species that I can see. I think there are Snappers, Eastern Sliders (or something like them), and Soft Shelled. Some of them are BIG!

I promised to list the sponsors of Jim Garrison's Eagle Project, so here we go, in no particular order: Angelo's Pizza, Vision Ace, Signs Now, Collman-Karsky, Joseph E. Garrison CPA, Thornton Donoghue & Assoc., Eddie's Bar & Grill, Danny's Food & Spirits, Sweetbay Supermarket, Einstein Brothers Bagels, and of course, The City of Dunedin. I applaud their involvement in this very worthwhile project. Bravo.

It seemed like one picture just wasn't enough today, so here is a second, from a different angle. It seems like these photos just don't do it justice, so look for more pictures of Turtle Island at some point in the future.

Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt V

Click to see a larger version in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt Vi Ah-hah! Now we know what the heck they were saving the rest of the plants for! A totally different kind of floating island. Very cool! As you can make out from the picture, these floating mats have holes in them for these specially potted water plants. In this picture, they are preparing the first of two such rafts. This was taken just before the alligator grabbed one of the boys. NO! Just kidding. I have never seen a gator in this lake.

In the picture below, they are making final preparations to plant the other island, which was to be more of a wildlife island, as opposed to a plant life raft. This island, in the picture, is the one you saw Mrs. Garrison checking on in my Christmas Eve post. Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt IV You may remember in the previous posts about the Eagle Scout project at Lake Paloma, that they were planting lots and lots of plants all around the edges of the lake. Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt III

Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt III Roberta Garrison [enlarge] Hey, someone has to keep these guys in line. It looks like Mrs. Garrison is checking with the island building team to see how it's going. This accumulation of wood and barrels and barricade wrap will get covered with a layer of coconut landscape material to become a floating habitat for the wildlife in Lake Paloma. We will soon see the resulting island afloat and hosting sunbathing turtles.

We have had a change in plans though, and will not be able to list the supporters of the project today. Please stay tuned for more pictures of this great project, and acknowledgement of the project sponsors.

Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt II

Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Having met Eagle Scout Jim Garrison's parents, and gotten a little information about what was going on, I started around Lake Paloma with my camera to see the 'troops' in action. It was impressive to see the Scouts, of all ages, planting all the new vegetation along the edges of the lake.

They planted a variety of fringe plants that will grow to provide habitat for a wide variety of wildlife that call the lake home. As I visit Lake Paloma on a regular basis, I look forward to watching these improvements develop. Tomorrow we will check on the island building progress. We will also take a moment to acknowledge the supporters of Jim's project.

Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Floating Wildlife Islands Project

Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Floating Wildlife Islands Project [enlarge] I was recently tipped off that a local Eagle Scout would be installing floating islands in my favorite duck pond, Lake Paloma, here in Dunedin, Florida. Needless to say, I made arrangements to be there and get some good pictures for my Dunedin blog. After all, this is really cool stuff! :D And so begins a new series that will last at least several days as I show you the progression of this project.

When I arrived that morning, last Saturday, they had already gotten setup and were hard at work. That's when I met Jim Garrison's parents, Roberta and Joe. They were fine with me being there and snapping shots, so I got right to it. One team was beginning the work on one of the floating islands. You can see them in the photo above. Other, lots of others, were at work planting all sorts of wetland fringe plants along the edges of the lake. They even had City of Dunedin personnel there helping. You gotta love that.

In the days ahead, you will follow along as they plant almost a thousand plants, make two different kinds of floating 'islands', and anchor them in the lake. In Friday's St. Petersburg Times, there is a nice story about Jim and his project. Click here if you would like to read it. And if you are feeling supportive, click the Scouting banner below to see how you can help. Thanks!

I was not able to find a Charlie Brown, or Lucy, or Pig Pen decorated light pole, but I am keeping my eyes open for them! I would love to see a Linus decorated light pole. I think he is my favorite of the Peanuts Gang.

Sadly, I must admit that I do not know what business or community organization decorated this pole. I will be working to find out. Someone asked if these poles make it to Christmas. Yes, it is my understanding that they will be up at least until Christmas.

Dunedin Florida: Downtown Dunedin: Decorated Light Poles Contest: Black Pearl

Dunedin Florida: Downtown Dunedin: Decorated Light Poles Contest: Black Pearl Another in our continuing series on the Downtown Dunedin Decorated Holiday Light Poles Contest. Wow, that was a mouthful. Kids, don't try that at home!

This pole, I am told, was decorated by The Black Pearl Restaurant. And what a snazzy, classy place it is. So it makes sense that this decorated light pole would have such a classy look. It's just beautiful, and that's all there is to it. I love that they have gifts hanging below the tree. After all, what is a Christmas Tree without gifts beneath?

We have seen some excellent decorating of light poles so far. There are still more to be found too! I would imagine judging a winner could be tough!
