Dunedin, Florida: A Postcard Perfect Day At The Dunedin Marina

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: A Postcard Perfect Day At The Dunedin Marina No, I don't seem to be able to resist taking more pictures at the Marina, especially when it is a day as beautiful as this one. Talk about blue sky and fluffy white clouds! This is what we are talking about when we brag about how beautiful this area is.

And here's some cool news: I have opened a store on Cafe Press. That's right, as I expand the product available at the store, you will have the opportunity to buy postcards, calendars, note cards and so on featuring some of the best photographs from the Dunedin Daily Photo!

The name of the store is ABOCAI, which stands for A Bunch Of Crazy-Ass Ideas. :) And the first product available in my store are postcards featuring the photograph above. If you'd like to see what the image above looks like as a postcard, click this link: POSTCARD. If you like what you see, you can purchase a pack of 8 postcards for only $7.99.

Dunedin, Florida: Dunedin Marina Boats All Sitting Pretty

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Dunedin Marina Boats All Sitting Pretty It's pretty much always a nice time to stop by Dunedin Marina and check out the floating eye candy. Yes, lots more to come, as always.

Really, though, is it true, are boats simply holes in the water into which money is dumped? They are pretty though, most of them.

Dunedin, Florida: Honeymoon Island Beach Jet Ski Fun

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Honeymoon Island Beach Jet Ski Fun Bring your own, or rent one. Lots of people enjoy blazing across the waters around Honeymoon Island. In the background, the condos and resorts of Clearwater Beach confirm your presence in a paradise of sunshine and seaside fun.

"... Betty Jo was startled to see something rising up in the water beneath her as she sped along. She twisted the throttle hard to get past the object so it would not strike the bottom of her jet ski. It rattled her to see the large shape looming up out of the blue-green water.

It broke the surface just behind her, and she screamed. It was a hand. Not just any hand. It was a HUGE hand! It was big enough to hold her jet ski in it like a bar of soap. She gunned it hard and sped away, watching over her shoulder as the hand rose out of the water, clutching at thin air as water drained off of it like a waterfall.

With a jolt, Betty Jo realized it was trying to grab her. Suddenly her blood ran cold. What now? What next? The hand turned slowly in her direction and sunk below the water's surface. This was not good. She didn't know where it was now, but she was sure it wasn't gone for good. She turned her craft toward the shore and gunned it again. There, ahead of her, it was coming up again, rising up from whatever dark depths had kept it hidden before now. She shrieked as she twisted the throttle as far as it would go and the hand shot up toward her speeding craft..."

Dunedin, Florida: Kiwanis Park Benches With A Waterfront View

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Kiwanis Park Benches With A Waterfront View In Dunedin, just off Alternate Highway 19, you can find some neat little parks. Many are nothing more than a couple of benches, a plot of grass, a seawall, and an awesome waterfront view. They may not seem like much to an athletinaut, but if you can find some quiet space in your mind, they are a great place to sit and ponder the universe. Of course, if you can't get your mind quiet, sitting and watching the water move for a while might help with that.

"... Mathilde smiled a tiny little smile of satisfaction as she reached the park and walked the narrow wavy sidewalk to the water's edge. She was alone in the small space, just her, the benches, the grass, and that wide blue-green expanse of water. Nothing there to distract her. Nothing to keep her from her appointment, her date.

Her curly white hair shifted only slightly in the sea breeze. The wrinkles on her lightly tanned face asserted her place in the history that had been her life so far. She folded tired hands in her lap, rested her stiff back against the green cradle of the bench. She felt the heat of the sun soaking into her body, her soul. It felt good. 'Surely', she mused, 'I must have some plant life in my bloodline'. The irony made her smile.

Settled now, she relaxed into an easy, comfortable vigil, staring out over the water. Her eyes lost their focus, as if she were looking at nothing. The nearer sounds slowly faded away, leaving the distant cries of the seagulls and the soft murmuring of the waves against the sea wall. Then, as she sat there in a trance like state, nearly oblivious of her surroundings, he slowly appeared before her.

She grinned broadly, like a young woman welcoming the appearance of her lover. 'Clarence, darling', she murmured. He took her hand, bent, and kissed it. She sighed deeply. A passing jogger wondered briefly at the lone, old woman sitting on the bench gesturing. Clarence sat down next to Mathilde, and she lay her head on his shoulder. 'It seems like I haven't seen you in so long Clarence', she whispered, 'I've missed you so'. He put his arm around her shoulders. 'I know darling, I know'..."

Dunedin, Florida: Honeymoon Island Waters: Michael Phelps?

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Honeymoon Island Waters: Michael Phelps? Fishing Boat I don't know about you... but I think that looks a little like Michael Phelps on that there boat! Maybe the waters off Dunedin's Honeymoon Island Beach ARE his secret training waters? And maybe they need a boat that fast to keep up with him when he is in training?

"... 'But coach, why CAN'T I swim this fast in competition? I mean, I'm good, you know I am, and I'm faster than ANY of them!' Michael whined to his coach.

'Yes, I know you are, but remember, if they find out you have gills, and if anyone actually SEES you swimming as fast as a dolphin, the Navy with snatch you up for experiments and you will never see daylight again!'

'Now, get back in the water and show me your really slow stroke, the one we worked out where you will win the meet, but only just'..."

Dunedin, Florida: Bass Tracker Off Honeymoon Island Beach Pro Crappie If you're like me, and you find the Four Reel in yesterday's post even beyond the means of your daydreams, maybe this is more our speed? But then, a Bass Tracker in the Gulf Of Mexico? Maybe they're after sea bass! :)

But then, the other name on the side of the boat (click to see it larger) is Pro Crappie 175. I really don't think you can find any crappie out there. But hey, what do I know? Still, seems like a nice boat to be able to buzz around in, if you stay close to shore that is. And how about that blue stretching away to forever behind them... cool.

Dunedin, Florida: Honeymoon Island Beach: Childish Joy There is nothing quite like the pure joy of childhood innocence. This young lady was having such a good time playing tag with the waves. When is the last time you made it out to Honeymoon Island Beach?

Dunedin, Florida: Edgewater Drive: Waterfront Light Show: Sunset

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Edgewater Drive: Waterfront Light Show: Sunset A light show of a different sort. Truth. Light. Water. Sky.

The quintessential Florida life. There is the sky: mostly blue, mostly clear. There is the water: bluish green, supporting of life and leisure. The light, from the Sun that shines so often and so brightly. There is Truth... the truth of Florida, of Dunedin, of Edgewater Drive, of a man wade-fishing, the sun setting, the palm trees silhouetted against the flaming horizon. The Truth of simply being, wherever and whenever you may be, whoever and however you may be, whatever and whyever you may be. Truth. Simply True.

Dunedin, Florida: April Theme Day: WATER: Honeymoon Island Beach

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: April Theme Day: Honeymoon Island Beach: WATER! I find it amazing, really, what an attraction we have for water. I don't mean just the water we drink, or wash with, but ANY water. Even water we can use for neither. Take the beach, for example. Honeymoon Island Beach, it's a State Park, is very popular. People come from all around to enjoy the beach... the water. If you take away the water, it's just sand. You can get it anywhere. But when you add water, it becomes a beach, a magic place. Even people who have no intention to get in it, drink it, walk on it, bathe in it, etc., will come to the beach... just to sit near it!

There are almost 200 Daily Photo bloggers participating in Theme Day today. I encourage you to wander through the list below, and check out 'WATER' around the world.

Dunedin, Florida: Dunedin Marina: "It Was A Cold And Windy Night"

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Dunedin Marina, Cold, Windy Night It was a cold and windy night. The shrouds of the sailboats whistled and moaned in the cold, cold breezes. The marina was alive with the restless jostling of craft both large and small. Somewhere in the distance a siren wailed. Near at hand a low creaking sound. Perhaps a piling coming loose, perhaps a dock failing under the pressure of pounding waves. Palm fronds all pointing the one direction, away, away, away from the terrible cold, away from the unrelenting pressure.

Wintry weather has returned to remind us of the calendar's unavoidable rule. It is January. It is not a time of balmy breezes and warm sunny skies. It is time for cold, and wind, and gray. Well, at least as much as it gets like that here in Florida.

Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt VII

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt VII There's no denying it. These boys were having fun. And hey, this is Dunedin, Florida, so it just wasn't cold that day... at all! So this is what I like to call Turtle Island. They have strapped down the coconut fiber landscape material, and they are planting it with more aquatic plants now. Shortly after this, it will be towed out to its new home.

If all goes well, tomorrow I will post a picture taken today, of the wildlife enjoying this new Turtle Island. So far I have seen a max of about 8 turtles on the island, and today I saw several turtles sharing it with some egrets and herons. We will see who is about tomorrow when I point the big lens at them!

Sunday's posting will wrap up the series on the Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project. I hope you have enjoyed it. I appreciate the comments from those of you who found it heartening to see this type of community spirit in these young men, and women. And I also appreciate those of you who got bored with the series, but still came back to see what was happening next. :D

Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt V

Click to see a larger version in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt Vi Ah-hah! Now we know what the heck they were saving the rest of the plants for! A totally different kind of floating island. Very cool! As you can make out from the picture, these floating mats have holes in them for these specially potted water plants. In this picture, they are preparing the first of two such rafts. This was taken just before the alligator grabbed one of the boys. NO! Just kidding. I have never seen a gator in this lake.

In the picture below, they are making final preparations to plant the other island, which was to be more of a wildlife island, as opposed to a plant life raft. This island, in the picture, is the one you saw Mrs. Garrison checking on in my Christmas Eve post. Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt IV You may remember in the previous posts about the Eagle Scout project at Lake Paloma, that they were planting lots and lots of plants all around the edges of the lake. Cool. But these plants were all left back at the staging area. Why would that be? Do you really want to know? Good! Then come back tomorrow and see what happens to these plants.

Dunedin Florida: Dunedin Causeway: Jet Skis!

Dunedin Florida: Dunedin Causeway: Jet Skis! Okay, at this point we know that you can sail off the Dunedin Causeway, in St. Joseph Sound or Hurricane Pass. We know you can ride bicycles on the Dunedin Causeway Spur of the Pinellas Trail. And I think I mentioned the jet skis... but I wanted to drive that one home to you. These things are fast and fun. At least, they look like a lot of fun.

Admittedly, I woul prefer a sit-down craft myself, like a waverunner. I can imagine that these get to be a bit much on the knees, with all that wave pounding, if you are not of an active nature. :) Either way, these two really seemed to be enjoying themselves. And there really is a lot of space out there, plenty of room for all manner of watercraft. So you definitely want to put it on your Florida Vacation list, or your after-relocation relaxation list, to check out jet ski or waverunner rentals.

Winter Water Activities in Dunedin, Florida

Winter Water Activities in Dunedin, FloridaMy last several posts, featuring scenes of Christmas Celebrations in Downtown Dunedin have met with delight at the realization that many people are wearing shorts in those photos. I am sensing a lot of desire for warm weather and sunshine. So, because this is why people relocate to, or vacation in, Florida and the Dunedin area, I am starting a series today of sunny winter fun.

The photo above was taken from side street just a few blocks north of Downtown Dunedin, just north of the Dunedin Marina. I have never seen this spinnaker before. But it is a pretty little craft, and certainly speaks to the spirit of Florida Living. It looks like fun, doesn't it?

The body of water they are sailing upon is called St. Joseph Sound by some people, or Clearwater Harbor by others, and makes up part of the Intracoastal Waterway . The trees in the background are on Caladesi Island, which is also Caladesi Island State Park. To get to the Gulf Of Mexico from here, you either go a little further south to Clearwater Pass, or you go a little north to Hurricane Pass. In fact, over the next several days, I will bring you more images of sunny winter water fun along the Dunedin Causeway, including boating activity in Hurricane Pass.

If you would like to see more photos of the area, check out Clearwater Daily Photo and Clearwater Beach Daily Photo too!

Dunedin Florida - Dunedin Causeway Bridge

Dunedin Florida - Dunedin Causeway BridgeHappy December 1st! Today we celebrate the City Daily Photo theme: Bridges. After dark photography has caught my fancy of late, so I wanted to share this after dark bridge image with you. Kudos to my Nikon D80, again! This is the Dunedin Causeway Bridge. And that is a Great Blue Heron in the foreground (click the photo to enlarge it).

There is so much that goes on from this causeway, and under and around this bridge, that I cannot cover it all in one manageable post. So today I will cover the basics. Dunedin Causeway ends on Honeymoon Island. Which is where you will find Honeymoon Island State Park. From that state park, you can take a ferry to another state park, Caladesi Island State Park.

Caladesi Island used to be accessible by ferry or private boat only. In 1985, Hurricane Elena closed the narrow pass to the south of the island (Not to be confused with Hurricane Pass, at the north end of the island). As a result, you can actually walk onto Caladesi Island from the north end of Clearwater Beach (But trust me, it's a long way from where you would have to park your car!). These two islands are home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, if not the entire world. So yes, if you are visiting Dunedin or Clearwater or the area in general, you should at least drive out to the end of the causeway, and go for a walk on Honeymoon Island!

The image below is from Google Earth, and shows the Dunedin Causeway from an altitude of about 8,000 feet. The bridge in the photo above is at the right in the image below. Honeymoon Island is just out of frame to the left. ** Click the names if you would like to see my bridge posts on the Clearwater Daily Photo site, or the Clearwater Beach Daily Photo site.

In recognition of our summer-like temps (high of 82F), I offer up this archive picture from a moonlight paddle sponsored by a local kayak outfitter, Osprey Bay Outdoors. We launched from Dunedin Marina in the evening, just a little while before sunset. Then we paddled to a spoil island less than a mile from the launch for a Jimmy Buffet, Margaritaville style party. We all had drinks, burgers, hot dogs and s'mores while we watched the sun go down. Then we partied for a while, and paddled back to the Dunedin Marina under a brilliant moon, arriving around midnight. It was a lot of fun. And hey, it's Florida, that's why we live here, isn't it?

You can't see my boat in this shot, but it looks very much like the third one from the left. It's a Dirigo 120, by Old Town. You can see the Old Town information about it here. It's not a real fancy boat, but I love it just the same. This area is perfect for kayaking, with rivers, bays, harbors and the Gulf of Mexico all nearby. Of course, the weather makes it enjoyable just about all year round.

And here I borrow a great idea from my fellow blogger in Brasov, Romania, including some satellite images from Google Earth. Modern technology is AWESOME! The picture on the left is the spoil island we visited for the party. The middle image is the Dunedin Marina. The image on the right shows both the Marina and the spoil island, so you can get a little bit of an idea of the distance. Click to enlarge.
