Dunedin, Florida: Some Ducks Are Such Posers!

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Some Ducks Are Such Posers! I snapped this total poser of a duck (that's Muscovy Duck) while walking around Lake Paloma. I tell you, he was totally posing! The more I snapped, the more he posed. Hmmm, come to think of it, it might have been a FEMALE duck! lol

I gotta tell you, when you see this little lake for the first time, Lake Paloma, you might think it's just another overgrown (barely) pond. I mean, it really isn't all that big. BUT... I see some of the coolest birds in the lake, or in the vicinity. Here's a list of all the different birds I have seen in my last couple of walks around and near the lake: Muscovy Duck, Mallard Duck, Mottled Duck, Wood Duck, White Heron, Great White Heron, Great Blue Heron, White Ibis, Kingfisher, Osprey, Crested Night Heron, Bald Eagle (FOR REAL!), Gallinule, Blue Jay, Starling, Crow, Grackle, Mockingbird, Cardinal, and I am sure I am forgetting at least two more.

Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Landscape View

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Landscape View Lush Green Vista Lake Paloma, Dunedin, Florida. It's just a small little lake in an out-of-the-way corner of Dunedin. But it is pretty, and relatively peaceful. Surrounded by a cozy little neighborhood, with a variety of housing styles and values.

Hmmm, does it sound like this message was brought to you by the local Chamber of Commerce, or perhaps the local Real Estate board? Nope, just me appreciating a little slice of Americana right here in Dunedin, Florida. That's why I take pictures of Dunedin, Florida, because I like it! :)

Dunedin, Florida: Ducks Gang: Corner Of Hibiscus And Paloma

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Ducks Gang: Corner Of Hibiscus And Paloma It's true! Gang activity right here in Dunedin! These ducks are a real treat to see here at the pond. They seem to be doing well, and growing in numbers.

Hopefully people will not decide that the ducks are too happy, and decide they have to go. That's how people get, it seems, they get so they don't like to see ducks getting happy and doing well and having families. I hope they leave this group alone.

Dunedin, Florida: Island Check: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Project

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Island Check: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Project Here we see the last of the three floating islands installed in December 2007 by a local Boy Scouts troop working on an Eagle Scout project. As I mentioned earlier, the islands have come a long way since they were first floated out onto the lake.

It's pretty impressive in a lot of ways. I can just imagine what they might look like in a few years. It hasn't been 12 months yet, and they look great. Perhaps, they will fill in around the edges where many plants were lost in the first few months. I have seen ducks and other water birds wandering around the 'interiors' of the islands, so I won't be surprised if they start building nests out there.

Dunedin, Florida: Floating Islands Revisited: Boy Scout Project

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Floating Islands Revisited: Boy Scout Project I cannot deny the skepticism I felt when I first saw these islands floated on Lake Paloma by the Boy Scouts working on an Eagle Scout project. And in the first few months, it seemed like they were coming apart more than growing into their new surroundings.

But I am happy to report, with photographic evidence, that they seem to be growing quite successfully into islands that actually support wildlife. I'm happy to see it, as I think it adds that much more interest and wildlife diversity to what might otherwise be just another drainage pond. Check out the original posts that chronicled the Eagle Scout project that put these islands here.

Dunedin, Florida: Paloma Lake Boy Scout Project: Heron Island

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Paloma Lake Boy Scout Project: Heron Turtle Island Checking back on the Boy Scout Project that I first posted about back in December of last year. The plantings around the lake are doing really well now. And the floating islands are really filling in nicely. I have watched the turtles and herons enjoying this particular island since shortly after it was launched. Now they share it with a healthy shock of lush green growth.

DINING NOTE: I found the coolest little place for cool eats and drinks in Downtown Dunedin yesterday. It's called "Light Bites ...the Mermaid Tavern". Comfortable is the first word I can think of to describe it. Friendly would be the second word. I was fortunate to meet the owner Kimberly Frazier, and found her an entertaining and gracious hostess. Currently, the hours are 6pm to 9pm or ? on weekdays, and 9am to 3pm on Saturdays. I will be heading back for pictures next time, so look for more about this neat place in future posts.

Where is Light Bites? 927 Broadway Street (aka Alt 19), Ste A. Just South of the Holiday Inn Express & North of the Sun Trust Bank. Parking is available adjacent to Light Bites in front of the dental building as well as in the rear. When parking in the rear, look for the mermaid tavern sign marking the back door.

Dunedin, Florida: Stalking The White Ibis At Lake Paloma

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Stalking The White Ibis At Lake Paloma I had gone on a birding photo safari at Lake Paloma earlier this year, and while reviewing previous snapping results, found this shot. If you view it at full size by clicking on it, you might get an idea of the intimacy I felt when I saw this group of mature and immature White Ibis.

These are lovely, stately birds whose presence always makes me feel serene. They will calmly 'graze' their way across a front yard, and down the street, then take flight so quickly and glide overhead like a flashback to the days of early Egypt. I love to see them around.

Dunedin, Florida: Paloma Lane Street Scene

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Paloma Lane Street Scene Picture if you will... a quiet, peaceful street in a small, cozy town on a sunny, cheerful coastline in Florida. That would be Paloma Lane (of Paloma Lake fame), in wonderful, cozy, friendly, delightful Dunedin, on the West Coast of Florida.

It's a beautiful sunny day, the birds are singing in the trees, the ducks are doing ducky things in the lake and on the grassy banks... all is right in the world. Happy Sunday.

Dunedin, Florida: Alamo Lane Neighborhood

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Alamo Lane Neighborhood This is Alamo Lane. It's not a high priced, fancy neighborhood. It's a NICE neighborhood. I love to walk here when I get a chance. That is Lake Paloma on the right. If you've been here before, you have read about Lake Paloma.

If you found me while searching for Dunedin real estate, that's because I wrote about a house for sale down the street on the left. In fact, if you enlarge the picture by clicking on it, you can see the for sale sign! There are a couple of homes for sale on this block now. I think it would be a really nice place to live.

This location is really convenient, when it comes to Dunedin, real estate wise. From here you can hook up to the Pinellas Trail just a couple of blocks away. And from there, you can ride or walk to downtown in no time. What great fun to head downtown for lunch, just a few minutes from home. Then head over to the Dunedin Marina to see what's going on. Hang out in the park there, or one of the others nearby. Lots of fun!

Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma: An Inkling Of Ibis

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma: An Inkling Of Ibis Flock Birds If I actually took a picture of these beautiful birds every time I saw them and thought about it, this would be Ibis Daily Photo instead! Just think of it... Ibis every day! A new and different photograph of Ibis each and every day... Yeah, probably not happening, eh? LOL!

But seriously, I do find them fascinating, and beautiful. So if you see a few more pictures of them on here than you might expect, I hope you will forgive me. Thanks, and Happy Presidents Day!

Dunedin, Florida: Pinellas Trail Parking At Lake Paloma

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Pinellas Trail Parking At Lake Paloma Very near Lake Paloma there is a parking area designated for the Pinellas Trail. You can park here, for free, and you are just a block and a half from the Pinellas Trail. In fact, the truck in the background, driving away from me, is just about even with where the trail crosses the street here, San Christopher Dr.

I was happy to see this shiny new sign go up recently. In the past, there had been white, individual letters mounted on the bricks. These seemed to have a habit of falling off with some regularity. Or, someone had a habit of pulling them off the bricks. I suspect this nice new sign will have better luck.

Dunedin, Florida: Trees Need Love Too

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Trees Need Love Too Lake Paloma San Christopher Near Coke I found this incredible example of Trees In Love near Lake Paloma. I have seen some interesting Tree Love before, but this is the most extreme. The Oak has completely encircled the Palm tree. Talk about a heart breaker... the Palm tree has died.

If you click and enlarge the photo, you can see one of our local lizards hanging head-down on the Palm trunk, just below the Oak circlet. If you are cruising Dunedin, this tree is just off San Christopher Dr., near the Coca-Cola facility.

Dunedin, Florida: "HALT! Who Goes There?"

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Survey Marker Protection: County Land Survey I came across this sign as I walked around Lake Paloma recently. As I read it, I suddenly got the sensation that I was being watched. Quickly, I checked my feet to make sure they were not standing on a survey marker. I did NOT want to be construed as having endangered the survey marker. That's when a voice bellowed from the bushes, "HALT! Who goes there?!?!"

No, not really... but hey, it could happen! Really though, it's interesting to see this sign. When I bought 45 acres on a mountainside in Washington State, the corners were marked with things like GIANT TREES, and when you hiked through the woods to them, you scrabbled around in the fallen leaves below to find a not-very-well-marked steel pipe or concrete monument. What fun. It's not like that in the city.

Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt VIII

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt VIII Welcome to Turtle Island! No, probably not a fair name, and certainly not democratically selected, but I like it. As I approached the edge of Lake Paloma today, I counted at least 8 turtles sunning themselves. Not bad. In addition, I have seen as many as 4 long legged wading birds out there at one time. Cool. The turtles seem to be of maybe three species that I can see. I think there are Snappers, Eastern Sliders (or something like them), and Soft Shelled. Some of them are BIG!

I promised to list the sponsors of Jim Garrison's Eagle Project, so here we go, in no particular order: Angelo's Pizza, Vision Ace, Signs Now, Collman-Karsky, Joseph E. Garrison CPA, Thornton Donoghue & Assoc., Eddie's Bar & Grill, Danny's Food & Spirits, Sweetbay Supermarket, Einstein Brothers Bagels, and of course, The City of Dunedin. I applaud their involvement in this very worthwhile project. Bravo.

It seemed like one picture just wasn't enough today, so here is a second, from a different angle. It seems like these photos just don't do it justice, so look for more pictures of Turtle Island at some point in the future.

Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt VII

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt VII There's no denying it. These boys were having fun. And hey, this is Dunedin, Florida, so it just wasn't cold that day... at all! So this is what I like to call Turtle Island. They have strapped down the coconut fiber landscape material, and they are planting it with more aquatic plants now. Shortly after this, it will be towed out to its new home.

If all goes well, tomorrow I will post a picture taken today, of the wildlife enjoying this new Turtle Island. So far I have seen a max of about 8 turtles on the island, and today I saw several turtles sharing it with some egrets and herons. We will see who is about tomorrow when I point the big lens at them!

Sunday's posting will wrap up the series on the Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project. I hope you have enjoyed it. I appreciate the comments from those of you who found it heartening to see this type of community spirit in these young men, and women. And I also appreciate those of you who got bored with the series, but still came back to see what was happening next. :D

Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt VI

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt VI This may be my favorite photograph of the series. Here we have two 'chosen' boys heading out into the Lake with the two floating plant rafts in tow. In the boat with them are the anchors (cinder blocks) that will anchor the plant rafts in place. It's a good thing that Lake Paloma is not very large, and that they were not going far... because I can't really say that they had the best paddling gear in there! :D

Tomorrow and Sunday, I will post the last of this conservation photography / Eagle Scout Project series. Tomorrow will be the final preparations of what I like to call Turtle Island. With luck, I will have a decent picture of a 'be-turtled' island for you on Sunday. I have gotten some nice feedback on this series, and what these fine young people are doing here. I want to thank you all for your comments, and thank you for visiting, whether you leave a comment or not. :)

HEY! Monday is New Year's Eve! What are you doing? Will you be partying at some wild and crazy New Year's Eve celebration? Or will you have a quiet countdown party at home? Either way, crazy or quiet, let's make it a good one, and welcome a New Year to make things happen! :D

Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt V

Click to see a larger version in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt Vi Ah-hah! Now we know what the heck they were saving the rest of the plants for! A totally different kind of floating island. Very cool! As you can make out from the picture, these floating mats have holes in them for these specially potted water plants. In this picture, they are preparing the first of two such rafts. This was taken just before the alligator grabbed one of the boys. NO! Just kidding. I have never seen a gator in this lake.

In the picture below, they are making final preparations to plant the other island, which was to be more of a wildlife island, as opposed to a plant life raft. This island, in the picture, is the one you saw Mrs. Garrison checking on in my Christmas Eve post. I HOPE YOU ALL HAD A WONDERFUL AND MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Click on the picture to see a larger version in a new window.
Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt IV You may remember in the previous posts about the Eagle Scout project at Lake Paloma, that they were planting lots and lots of plants all around the edges of the lake. Cool. But these plants were all left back at the staging area. Why would that be? Do you really want to know? Good! Then come back tomorrow and see what happens to these plants.

Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt III

Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt III Roberta Garrison [enlarge] Hey, someone has to keep these guys in line. It looks like Mrs. Garrison is checking with the island building team to see how it's going. This accumulation of wood and barrels and barricade wrap will get covered with a layer of coconut landscape material to become a floating habitat for the wildlife in Lake Paloma. We will soon see the resulting island afloat and hosting sunbathing turtles.

We have had a change in plans though, and will not be able to list the supporters of the project today. Please stay tuned for more pictures of this great project, and acknowledgement of the project sponsors.

Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Pt II

Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Wildlife Project Having met Eagle Scout Jim Garrison's parents, and gotten a little information about what was going on, I started around Lake Paloma with my camera to see the 'troops' in action. It was impressive to see the Scouts, of all ages, planting all the new vegetation along the edges of the lake.

They planted a variety of fringe plants that will grow to provide habitat for a wide variety of wildlife that call the lake home. As I visit Lake Paloma on a regular basis, I look forward to watching these improvements develop. Tomorrow we will check on the island building progress. We will also take a moment to acknowledge the supporters of Jim's project.
