Dunedin, Florida: Historical Society Museum

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Historical Society Museum This is the scene they have set outside the Dunedin Historical Society Museum. These are some old traveling cases, loaded onto some sort of old wagon. I think I have some old family stuff in storage, that looks a little like these. Oy!

This being 2008, any such place needs to have its accompanying sign warning folks not to use up the place and damage it. However, it is nice to see that there are some public restrooms available nearby! The museum is located in the middle of the Downtown Dunedin district.

Dunedin, Florida: Ducks Gang: Corner Of Hibiscus And Paloma

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Ducks Gang: Corner Of Hibiscus And Paloma It's true! Gang activity right here in Dunedin! These ducks are a real treat to see here at the pond. They seem to be doing well, and growing in numbers.

Hopefully people will not decide that the ducks are too happy, and decide they have to go. That's how people get, it seems, they get so they don't like to see ducks getting happy and doing well and having families. I hope they leave this group alone.

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Coca-Cola Orange Juice Concentrate Facility Did you know... The Coca-Cola company has an orange juice concentrate facility in Dunedin, Fl? Yup, they do. Long ago, this plant belonged to Hood Dairy. Then it eventually came to be owned by the Minute Maid company. Now it is owned by Coca-Cola. They make a lot of orange juice concentrate there every year.

Who'd a thunk it, eh? What about you? Do you like Coca-Cola? Do you drink Minute Maid orange juice?

Dunedin, Florida: Downtown Dunedin Yellow Wall

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Downtown Dunedin Yellow Wall I don't know who is responsible for this yellow wall in Downtown Dunedin, but they did it right if you ask me. I love the texture, and the lines, and the great color. It may seem rather utilitarian, just being a wall, but they made it an attractive part of the Downtown atmosphere!

Maybe if someone out there knows who made this wall happen, you might leave me a comment, as I would love to give credit for this one. Meanwhile, I am off to look for more walls, more lines, more texture. Texture, of course, including just about anything and anyone I can catch in my viewfinder! :)

Dunedin, Florida: Vespa Scooter At Dunedin Marina

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Vespa Scooter At Dunedin Marina While loitering at the Dunedin Marina one day recently, I spotted this sharp looking scooter. As I crept closer and closer for a photograph, I realized it is an honest to gosh Vespa scooter!

So I snapped a few shots, and went on my merry way. Of course, now that I am posting the picture, I am wishing I had looked a little more closely to see what model it is. Oh well. I am slowly, slowly, learning to look beyond the initial snap, when I take it, and see what other information is to be had.

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Honeymoon Island Nature Trail 12 I honestly cannot be sure that this is number twelve in this series... but I really didn't think you would mind if I got the number wrong.

What this is... is another shot of the trail on Honeymoon Island. The hiking trail, or nature trail, has various turn around points so you can enjoy it a little longer if you'd like, or get back to your car sooner if you'd like. Honeymoon Island State Park.

Dunedin, Florida: Honeymoon Island Nature Trail 11

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Honeymoon Island Nature Trail 11 I have been feeling the urge to get outside a bit more lately. But I have been stymied by work. So, since I can't get there in person, I decided to post some pictures of the kinds of places I would like to be. Why? Because I like to share these beautiful places with you all, so you can enjoy them too!

This photograph was taken out on Honeymoon Island, also known as Honeymoon Island State Park, while hiking the Nature Trail. It's a really awesome place, that gives you a deeply natural feeling. It's easy to get out there, the trail is easy to get to and easy to hike. Definitely a thumbs up recommendation on this trail!

Dunedin, Florida: Action Snaps: Classic Jeep Wagoneer

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Action Snaps: Classic Jeep Wagoneer Still on my action photography kick here. Another in the series from that street corner. As the cable guy says: "I could do this all day." But don't worry, I'll let it be for a bit after today. I don't want anyone out there to get motion sickness from too many moving pictures!

As I review these shots, I think I might be getting the hang of this action snapping thing. It's cool to see how one particular area seems to come into focus so well, while the rest is blurred by the movement. I guess it is about getting my panning speed and focus lined up right. What fun. As near as I can tell, this is a classic Jeep Limited Wagoneer.

Did you know that Amazon.com has a whole section devoted to Jeep Wagoneer? It's true! You can help support Dunedin Daily Photo by shopping for Jeep goodies with these advertisers:

Dunedin, Florida: Moving Motorcycle Man

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Moving Motorcycle Man As I mentioned earlier, there was the one man I photographed as he rode by on his motorcycle who did not look really happy. I don't know if he was suspicious of me and my camera, or just having a serious moment.

Again, though, I do not know what kind of motorcycle it is: Harley Davidson? Suzuki? Kawasaki? Honda? Yamaha? I don't know... and there are many more brands that might have a model like this one: Triumph, American Eagle, Buell, Confederate, Indian, Norton, and the list goes on and on.

Dunedin, Florida: Action Snaps: Trailered Boat

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Action Snaps: Trailered Boat Standing on a Downtown Dunedin street corner, near the Dunedin Marina, practicing my action photography, I snapped this neat looking boat. I don't know where it was heading, or where it came from, but I am pretty happy with how that shot turned out. Thank you Nikon! Let's here it for being able to preview the shot immediately.

This turns out to be a great way, for me, to practice the panning action shot. I can stand there on the corner and snap away at people in cars. Some give me strange looks, many never even notice I am there. Later, I will post a snap of a man on a motorcycle who didn't really look all that happy about me photographing him. But then, maybe he was thinking about something else entirely.

Dunedin, Florida: Ress Marine Barge

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Ress Marine Barge I snapped this picture just across the road from The Dunedin Woodwright. I first saw this strange looking barge when I was stuck in the minor traffic jam that resulted when it was being backed into its parking space. Looks interesting to me. So I thought I would share it.

The fact is, though... I got nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Bumpkus! So enjoy the picture, make up nice stories about the barge if you like. Or even nefarious and evil stories if you like. And if any of you go nuts and actually find a website for Ress Marine on the internet somewhere, let me know, and I will post it. :)

OH! OH! OH! And here's a bit of good news!! Light Bites, the Mermaid Tavern, is now also OPEN WEEKDAYS FOR LUNCH! Every time I go by, I think about getting a picture, because I love the way it looks. This is the kind of house I would buy in a heartbeat if I could.

But more importantly, this is the home of The Dunedin Woodwright. High end furniture, as I understand it. Sadly, there is no website to link you to! Something I will have to contact them about rectifying! ;) I love real woodwork. I hate that I can't afford it. Yet.

Dunedin, Florida: Cool Motorcycle Biker Couple Harley Davidson Honda Yamaha I was standing in Downtown Dunedin the other evening, practicing my moving-subject snapography, when this way cool couple went gliding by. I was looking through my camera the whole time, and she kept her peace sign up as they approached and passed me. I was so impressed. What cool people I thought.

As to the bike, I am afraid none of the shots are good enough to be sure what the make is. It would be natural to assume that it is a Harley Davidson, but I don't know for certain that it is not a Honda or a Yamaha or some other new brand that makes Harley style motorcycles.

Dunedin, Florida: Neat Looking House Home Real Estate Balcony Terrace Veranda Something about this scene draws me in. I so want to be sitting up on that second floor deck. Or balcony. Or terrace. Or veranda or WHATEVER it's called. It just looks like such a comfortable place to relax.

Now that's saying a lot, because I really don't go for that kind of architecture generally. But this place really looks neat. Of course, some of that has to come from the way cool landscaping. I mean, it might be a little out of control here and there, but I like it!

Dunedin, Florida: Frank Gregoire, Ron Walker Election Signs

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Frank Gregoire, Ron Walker Election Signs I admit it, I don't know a thing about these two guys. But it seems like they have a fan. I can tell you this: Frank Gregoire wants to be the Pinellas County Appraiser, and Ron Walker wants to be on the School Board. I am not sure why anyone would want to be those things... but perhaps this is how these two have decided they can help.

I don't know that I would ever want to run for a public office. Like most people, I suppose, I occasionally fantasize about being in those positions and making things better. But I don't know that I would be willing to fight through the election process and deal with the way campaigns seem to be run these days. Oh well, cancel the Me For Prez signs. :)

Dunedin, Florida: My Dream Home? It's really just an ordinary house. There is nothing grandiose about it. There is nothing rare or spectacular about it. But then again...

I am a garage/workshop kind of guy. So when I saw this little house in Dunedin with it's one car garage in front... AND a two car garage out back... I fell in love. I mean, for a small, typical house in an affordable neighborhood, it just doesn't get any better!

Dunedin, Florida: Downtown Dunedin Purple Heart Park

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Downtown Dunedin Purple Heart Park It never ceases to amaze me how things come together sometimes. Last week I posted a picture of a clock from Purple Heart Park, in Downtown Dunedin. I confessed that I knew nothing about the park, and promised I would keep my eyes open next time I was downtown. Well that came sooner than later, and I took several pictures the other day, so that I could post them here. And then...

Today Gloria left me a comment on the post about the park. It would seem she has all the scoop, and here it is:

On August 7, 2008, the City of Dunedin was honored through the dedication of the new Purple Heart Park just north of the intersection of Main Street and Edgewater Drive. The park is right next to the SunTrust bank branch on Alt 19. It is dedicated to all of our service people who have been given a Purple Heart. If you Google "Purple Heart Dunedin FL", you will be able to read all about it. Our friend, Al Lentz, who is the recipient of 2 Purple Heart awards and a veteran of two tours of duty in Viet Nam was instrumental in seeing this monument come to fruition. It took a lot of hard work on the part of the very veterans to whom we owe our freedom to see this project come to pass. Thank you to everybody involved. We love you Al :)

I must have just missed the dedication by days! Dangit! But major, major thanks to Gloria for this information!! Click here to read about the Park on the MOPH (Military Order of the Purple Heart) website. Click here to read the St. Petersburg Times story about the park. Here is another view:

Dunedin, Florida: Dunedin Real Estate: TOO High

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Dunedin Real Estate: Overpriced Home For Sale Dunedin Real Estate comes in many sizes, conditions, and prices... This adorable home has a lot going for it. But it has one big thing going against it... the price. For the 1,062 square foot home, they are asking $179,900!! That's $169.40 per square foot! That may fly in other parts of this country, but it is not going to fly here in little 'ole Dunedin. At least not on this street, which is close but not quite downtown. But then, maybe that is why it has been on the market for a whopping 213 days. Yeah, that's just over 7 months!

That being said, if the house interests you, the MLS # is 7324689, and the sign out front lists Charles Rutenberg Realty Inc. as the office, and Marie A. Carroll as the agent. Her number is 727-584-5000. You can even tell her you read about it on Dunedin Daily Photo if you like. :)

Dunedin, Florida: Downtown Night Walk: SunTrust Bank

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Downtown Night Walk: SunTrust Bank On a recent Night Walk through Downtown Dunedin, I was struck by the bold colors in this SunTrust sign. By day a bland symbol of American banking dogma, at night, a beacon of color in the black void that is after dark.

Eh? Yeah, anyway, I like the way the colors really pop at night, in the dark. Yeah, that's pretty much it. Now that I think of it, I will have to check out some of the other big banks around here, like Bank Of America, Wachovia, AmSouth, etc., to see if they have signs that POP at night...

From what I hear about Skips', it's a great 'neighborhood' kind of hang out. You can relax, have a drink, enjoy the night air, enjoy your friends, and enjoy the strangers around you who are slowly becoming friends. Sounds pretty cool, eh? Corner of Main and Douglas in Downtown Dunedin.

Dunedin, Florida: Make Way For Ducklings! When I was a child, I loved a book called "Make Way For Ducklings!" It was a wonderfully enchanting book written by Robert McCloskey in 1941. It has since sold over 2 million copies!

So when I saw this lineup, I could not resist the shot, nor the flashback to that wonderful book. And I must congratulate Ms. Muscovy on bringing this many of her brood to this age. I hate to say it, but the area is not conducive to the maturing of all ducklings hatched in each sitting.

Dunedin, Florida: Island Check: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Project

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Island Check: Lake Paloma Eagle Scout Project Here we see the last of the three floating islands installed in December 2007 by a local Boy Scouts troop working on an Eagle Scout project. As I mentioned earlier, the islands have come a long way since they were first floated out onto the lake.

It's pretty impressive in a lot of ways. I can just imagine what they might look like in a few years. It hasn't been 12 months yet, and they look great. Perhaps, they will fill in around the edges where many plants were lost in the first few months. I have seen ducks and other water birds wandering around the 'interiors' of the islands, so I won't be surprised if they start building nests out there.

Dunedin, Florida: Floating Islands Revisited: Boy Scout Project

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Floating Islands Revisited: Boy Scout Project I cannot deny the skepticism I felt when I first saw these islands floated on Lake Paloma by the Boy Scouts working on an Eagle Scout project. And in the first few months, it seemed like they were coming apart more than growing into their new surroundings.

But I am happy to report, with photographic evidence, that they seem to be growing quite successfully into islands that actually support wildlife. I'm happy to see it, as I think it adds that much more interest and wildlife diversity to what might otherwise be just another drainage pond. Check out the original posts that chronicled the Eagle Scout project that put these islands here.

Dunedin, Florida: Paloma Lake Boy Scout Project: Heron Turtle Island Checking back on the Boy Scout Project that I first posted about back in December of last year. The plantings around the lake are doing really well now. And the floating islands are really filling in nicely. I have watched the turtles and herons enjoying this particular island since shortly after it was launched. Now they share it with a healthy shock of lush green growth.

DINING NOTE: I found the coolest little place for cool eats and drinks in Downtown Dunedin yesterday. It's called "Light Bites ...the Mermaid Tavern". Comfortable is the first word I can think of to describe it. Friendly would be the second word. I was fortunate to meet the owner Kimberly Frazier, and found her an entertaining and gracious hostess. Currently, the hours are 6pm to 9pm or ? on weekdays, and 9am to 3pm on Saturdays. I will be heading back for pictures next time, so look for more about this neat place in future posts.

Where is Light Bites? 927 Broadway Street (aka Alt 19), Ste A. Just South of the Holiday Inn Express & North of the Sun Trust Bank. Parking is available adjacent to Light Bites in front of the dental building as well as in the rear. When parking in the rear, look for the mermaid tavern sign marking the back door.

Dunedin, Florida: What's The BUZZ? Bees Hive Nest Hmmm, what's that buzzing noise? I don't know. It's so... so... so deep. I mean, it sounds like a thousand bees all buzzing at the same time...

Yeah, that is one HUGE bee hive! I would put it at about 3 feet tall, and maybe a foot around. I spotted this beauty high up in a tree, and at first I could not be sure it was a bee hive. Then it seemed like there were little dots whirring about. Finally, I came back with my camera and telephoto lens. The result is there in living color. Each one of those little golden dots is a bee.

Dunedin, Florida: Favorite Feline Mailbox This is my favorite Feline Mailbox!

Okay, so it might not be my all time favorite mailbox... but it's right up there on any list. Just a simple sticker, but one that really makes this mailbox pop! I wonder what the mail person thinks every day when they put mail in this mailbox...

Dunedin, Florida: Road Work Perspective

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Road Work Perspective It's just a matter of perspective!

Road work in Dunedin. Scraping up the old, cracked road, and laying down some nice clean asphalt. Hey, it's a messy job, but someone's got to do it! I never did road work myself, what about you? Road construction? Flagger? Now that's a thankless job if I ever saw one.

Dunedin, Florida: Honeymoon Island Beach People 5

Dunedin, Florida: Honeymoon Island Beach People 5 There is so much to learn, so much to experience, at the beach.

Do you think the man is teaching the boy something about sea life, or life on the beach, or what the beach is all about? Is he showing him an interesting shell or rock he found? Maybe he is showing him a piece of frosted beach glass? Do you teach your children when you are on the beach?

Dunedin, Florida: Honeymoon Island Beach: Kayak Fishing

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Honeymoon Island Beach Kayak Fishing Foolish or Brave? It's not for me to say.

But I will say this... the word precarious came to mind as watched these guys set out in their inflatable kayak to go fishing. In some ways it doesn't make sense. But as I know a few young men who would go out in almost anything, just to get out on the water and be fishing, I think I understand what might drive these two young men to get on this thing and go fishing.

Dunedin, Florida: Honeymoon Island Beach People 4

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Honeymoon Island Beach People 4 I love that the beach is an everyone kind of place.

When I think about the beach, it seems like the kind of place that we can all enjoy. Some more than others, some less, but most everyone can enjoy the beach. That is probably because you can experience it with any of the five senses, without having to work at it. What about you, have you been to a beach lately?

Dunedin, Florida: A Treehouse Grows In Dunedin And by the by... on the way out to Honeymoon Island for a walk on the beach, DW spotted this way cool treehouse!

This is a pretty 'citified' area around here, and one just does not expect to find a treehouse like this. I LOVE TREEHOUSES!!! Did you know that there are builders out there who specialize in building treehouses for ADULTS... yes, like YOU and ME!!!

Dunedin, Florida: Colorful Dunedin Real Estate Market

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Colorful Dunedin Real Estate Market I have to interrupt our trip to Honeymoon Island for a spot of color!

I have been scoping out the Dunedin Real Estate market recently. The other day I stepped out into a garage, and look what I found! This was in a garage that was actually being included in the square footage of the house, they say, because there was an A/C vent out there, and flooring, and they had insulated the garage door! YIKES!

Dunedin, Florida: Honeymoon Island Beach For The Dogs

Click for larger picture in a new window
Dunedin, Florida: Honeymoon Island Beach For The Dogs & Pets On the other hand, if you don't feel like bringing the family, or the kids, you could just bring your dog instead!

That's right, as I have posted about before, Honeymoon Island has a big, beautiful beach area set aside where you can bring your pet. I have only ever seen dogs out there so far, but who knows... maybe you have a cat that likes the beach! There is even a dog washing station right at the edge of the parking lot. Pretty cool.

And be sure to check out We Love Dog Pictures.
