This is another in a series in progress capturing the variety of decorated light poles in Dunedin's Holiday Light Pole Decorating contest. Yes, more on the way!
I wasn't sure about this one at first, but it grows on me. I have seen more traditional images of Santa Claus, especially non-Americanized images from Europe that this reminds me of. What about you, have you seen this style of Santa Claus before? Whatever else you want to say about him, I think it looks pretty neat!
And yes, I was at the Old Fashioned Christmas event last night in Downtown Dunedin, and it was a lot of fun. I have plenty more pics to share with you, including some intersting live entertainment! It was a wonderful time, so be sure to bookmark this page so you can come back and see it all!

Dunedin Florida - Dunedin Causeway Bridge
Happy December 1st! Today we celebrate the City Daily Photo theme: Bridges. After dark photography has caught my fancy of late, so I wanted to share this after dark bridge image with you. Kudos to my Nikon D80, again! This is the Dunedin Causeway Bridge. And that is a Great Blue Heron in the foreground (click the photo to enlarge it).
There is so much that goes on from this causeway, and under and around this bridge, that I cannot cover it all in one manageable post. So today I will cover the basics. Dunedin Causeway ends on Honeymoon Island. Which is where you will find Honeymoon Island State Park. From that state park, you can take a ferry to another state park, Caladesi Island State Park.
Caladesi Island used to be accessible by ferry or private boat only. In 1985, Hurricane Elena closed the narrow pass to the south of the island (Not to be confused with Hurricane Pass, at the north end of the island). As a result, you can actually walk onto Caladesi Island from the north end of Clearwater Beach (But trust me, it's a long way from where you would have to park your car!). These two islands are home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, if not the entire world. So yes, if you are visiting Dunedin or Clearwater or the area in general, you should at least drive out to the end of the causeway, and go for a walk on Honeymoon Island!
The image below is from Google Earth, and shows the Dunedin Causeway from an altitude of about 8,000 feet. The bridge in the photo above is at the right in the image below. Honeymoon Island is just out of frame to the left. ** Click the names if you would like to see my bridge posts on the Clearwater Daily Photo site, or the Clearwater Beach Daily Photo site.

Dunedin Florida Downtown - Christmas Celebration
Can you guess where I will be Friday evening? That's right, I will be downtown, checking out the wonderful Christmas goings-on. It should be a lot of fun. The City of Dunedin is putting on what they call An Old Fashioned Christmas. There will be entertainment from local churches and schools, carriage rides, train rides, Santa's Workshop, "Dickens Village" and lots more. And tomorrow night, Saturday, they will have the Holiday Boat Parade and Tree Lighting. I hope to be able to post pictures from these events in future posts.

Dunedin Florida Downtown Shops
This is Erika's Place for Gifts and Indulgences. It's a very welcoming looking place, if you ask me. You may remember from an earlier post, the shop next door is The Enchanted Branch Gift Gallery. Erika's is filled with the most interesting stuff. All sorts of things that would make great gifts this time of year!
Here is a more recent photo of Erika's Place, taken just at sunset. I think there was some sort of wine tasting shop stroll going on. Or some such thing. It was really nice. They even had live music just down the way. But that shot is for another day! :)

Dunedin Florida Homes
Here is another fine example of the kind of housing we have here in Dunedin. This would probably be considered a typical home in a nice mid-level neighborhood. There are a number of homes available for sale or rent in this neighborhood. One just down the street, that is a little smaller, is selling for US$ 219,000.
From this spot, it is only a short drive to grocery stores, restaurants, various shops, and more. Just a little further, no more than 5 or 10 minutes drive, are the Downtown Dunedin area, Mease Hospital Dunedin, Westfield Countryside Mall, and much, much, more. Oh, and it might come in handy for you to know, should you be wanting to search for something in Dunedin, Florida, or map something here, that the zip code is 34698.

Dunedin Marina - Moonlight Paddle Launch
In recognition of our summer-like temps (high of 82F), I offer up this archive picture from a moonlight paddle sponsored by a local kayak outfitter, Osprey Bay Outdoors. We launched from Dunedin Marina in the evening, just a little while before sunset. Then we paddled to a spoil island less than a mile from the launch for a Jimmy Buffet, Margaritaville style party. We all had drinks, burgers, hot dogs and s'mores while we watched the sun go down. Then we partied for a while, and paddled back to the Dunedin Marina under a brilliant moon, arriving around midnight. It was a lot of fun. And hey, it's Florida, that's why we live here, isn't it?
You can't see my boat in this shot, but it looks very much like the third one from the left. It's a Dirigo 120, by Old Town. You can see the Old Town information about it here. It's not a real fancy boat, but I love it just the same. This area is perfect for kayaking, with rivers, bays, harbors and the Gulf of Mexico all nearby. Of course, the weather makes it enjoyable just about all year round.
And here I borrow a great idea from my fellow blogger in Brasov, Romania, including some satellite images from Google Earth. Modern technology is AWESOME! The picture on the left is the spoil island we visited for the party. The middle image is the Dunedin Marina. The image on the right shows both the Marina and the spoil island, so you can get a little bit of an idea of the distance. Click to enlarge.

Dunedin Florida - The Fenway On The Bay
This is the Fenway On The Bay resort hotel. It is located in Dunedin, Florida, on Edgewater Drive, where I showed you this home, and that home. It opened in 1925, and is now the subject of a campaign to save it. See the photo below. You can check out the Save The Fenway website here.
This photograph was taken right at sunset, so the building's sunset color was accentuated even further. It is a beautiful old part of Dunedin's history. In fact, as you will read on the Save The Fenway website, the first ever radio broadcast in Pinellas County (that's where we are), was broadcast from the Fenway during opening ceremonies! It's cool stuff, complete with lots of photos. Check it out.
A picture of the sign that alerted me to the campaign, and a second photo of the Fenway, with less 'sunset' on it.

City Of Dunedin Florida - Pioneer Park Bandshell
I know this is in Pioneer Park, in the City of Dunedin, but I am not sure one would call it a band shell. Stage perhaps, covered stage? Either way, it is a lovely structure, and it looks great in this park downtown. I can also tell you that they have a Green Market here, and show movies in the park here from time to time. Usually older movies. Some recent titles have been Arsenic and Old Lace, as well as Casablanca.
From here, many shops and restaurants are in walking distance. They are too many to name, but some that I have mentioned before include Casa Tina, Cafe Alfresco, The Enchanted Branch Gift Gallery, and Palm Latitudes. In the future, you will see more and more of these places, as I do my best to capture life in Dunedin, Florida in pixels, for you.

Dunedin Florida Decorated Light Pole Contest Pt II
I have been hunting down more of the decorated light poles in Downtown Dunedin. I found these just the other day. A matching pair out in front of a local Law Firm. Trying saying this fast: Frazer, Hubbard, Brandt, Trask & Yacavone, Attorneys At Law. In fact, if you click here to see their website, at the top of the page you can see the light pole, without decoration, that is now the "Nice" list. Pretty cool eh?
I have to correct some earlier information now. In an earlier posting, click here, I posted a photograph of a light pole decorated with a Dia de los Muertos theme. In that post I described the City of Dunedin's Light Pole Decorating Contest. Foolishly, I assumed that pole was a part of that contest. So, when I walked by the other day, looking for more decorated light poles, the pole had changed! It was still decorated in a theme that seemed Mexican in origin, but it was NOT the same. So, I walked into the Mexican restaurant across the street to ask some questions.
The restaurant is called Casa Tina. When I asked about the light pole, I got the scoop. They had decorated that pole alright, but the Dia de los Muertos theme was for Halloween! They simply hadn't taken it down and put up the Christmas holidays theme decorations yet. I see, said the blind man! Casa Tina is a really cool place, and if you click here you can check out their website and their menu. And in a future post, I will show you more of the decorated light poles that I found!

Dunedin Florida Downtown Shops
A neat little shop called The Enchanted Branch Gift Gallery. Click the name to see a little more about them. They are located just a few steps off Main Street in a delightful side street with several other shops of similar style. You might say it is an extension of Main Street, at right angles.
I hope you all had a great day yesterday. We celebrated Thanksgiving, and the whole family had a wonderful time. Whether you celebrate Thankgsiving or not, I hope you had a wonderful day yesterday, and I hope today is even better.
I hope you will take some time to explore Downtown Dunedin when you are in the area. There is enough here to enjoy for days and days.

Giving Thanks
Oh how I pondered and dithered and pondered some more. How best to represent the many, many things I am thankful for. Other holidays are more easily settled... a Christmas tree, an Easter egg, a Valentine heart, etc. But a turkey on Thanksgiving... it just doesn't say enough. So you look at the two in the picture and ask "What is he thankful for?"
It's not hard to guess, since I am showing the grand-twins, that I am thankful for family. But also for all the wonderful things in our lives that we are able to enjoy. Like fresh air, and clear skies. Living in Dunedin, Florida. A nice warm place to sleep every night. People who love us. The freedom to walk around my neighborhood in the evening, enjoying the moonlight and fresh air. Healthy babies (above). Fuzzy little ducklings. Sizzling sunsets. Fall colored leaves. A quiet place to sit. Food on the table each day. People in the world who care about other people, like Ham supporting Cancer Care, and Free Rice, and Free Hugs. Not to mention people that care about animals.
In addition, I am thankful for gorgeous white birds in county parks where I can see them in person, instead of in a book or museum. For trails and bikes and feet for walking. I'm thankful for the Daily Photo blog that I found that inspired me to start this one. And for the Romanian who teaches us about Brasov. For the incredible photography of OML. For a Boston blogger. I give thanks for ALL the bloggers out there doing City Daily Photo blogs, and who welcomed me into this incredible community. Not to mention all the OTHER photo blogs like this one, and that one, and this other one, and that other one, and any others I forgot at the moment.
I am thankful for the health of loved ones. Forgiveness. Patience. Wisdom. Acceptance. Tolerance. Peace, when it can be had. And I am thankful for YOU, a visitor to my Dunedin Daily Photo blog, because YOU make it all worth while. Thanks for coming today. I wish you and your family the very best Thanksgiving, and a life full of things to be thankful for.

Dunedin Florida SKATES!
That's right, Dunedin is proud to introduce their very own skate park. Over 10,000 square feet of rolling, flying, curving, swirling concrete skating action. The park was completed in August of this year. It's called Stirling Skate Park (click here to see the City Of Dunedin web page about it). Don't let the similarity to an empty swimming pool fool you, this place is built for action. This is a City of Dunedin owned and run skate park, with very reasonable fees for using it.
I researched the builders of the park, Team Pain, and have linked their website to their name here. However, due to the coding they are using on their website, the link will only take you to their home page. You must then choose "Concrete Skate Parks" on the left, and then choose "Stirling Skate Park - Dunedin Florida", in the list on the left (it is the second one down). Once there you will be rewarded with some interesting pictures of the park being built, and then being enjoyed. I was surprised to see that the have also built several parks in Belgium!
Speaking of awesome, have you seen the Amazon.com skateboarding store? They have tons of skateboarding must-haves, because really, there's no excuse. You can also support Dunedin Daily Photo by shopping with these advertisers:

Dunedin Main Street Shops
This will probably end up being a series also, in as much as there are a number of neat shops that I want to share with you. I believe the name of this shop is Palm Latitudes, and it fits! They have all kinds of cool stuff in there. Ceramic frogs that look so cool and awesome pirate t-shirts and napkins with funny sayings... you know the kind that have you standing there reading them for twenty minutes while you laugh your butt off! And lots and lots more stuff. Really cool. I rarely make it past this store when I am downtown. It is just too much fun.
If you remember Cafe Alfresco, from a previous posting, then it will make sense when I tell you this shop is just down the sidewalk from there. But don't worry if that doesn't make sense to you... just get downtown and you will find it all. :)
Oh, and yes, Brasov Daily Photo, the bench will be there waiting for you, on the waterfront.

Dunedin Florida Waterfront Home
Another in an intermittent series on the styles and variety of homes in Dunedin, Florida, a little slice of Dunedin real estate. This one is also on Edgewater Dr., right across the street from the water. Very nice homes along here. You can see a neighboring home by clicking here.
Also, for Kerri, who requested a close up of the bench in the previous sunset picture:
I hope this is close enough... when you click on it.
And thanks for your enthusiastic response to the Decorated Light Poles post. I am in the process of capturing the rest of that crowd, and will post accordingly.

Dunedin Has Trails!
Did I mention the trails in Dunedin? Oh yeah, Dunedin has many places to walk, skate, or ride bikes. This trail is not the same as the one on Edgewater Drive. This trail is part of the Pinellas Trail, which runs north-south for 34 miles through our county. But here in Dunedin, it goes through one of the best parts of town. You can stop off from the trail and enjoy a variety of dining opportunities, as well as shopping and sightseeing. And you can see from the cruved sign post, they make it all very artistic. This sign gives a nod to the origins of the space, an old railroad corridor.
To the left, just outside the view, is a wonderful restaurant called Cafe Alfresco. They have an oen air section where you can watch the trail users go by as you enjoy a fabulous meal. It's a great place for a Downtown Dunedin lunch! What can I say, Dunedin, Florida is a great place to visit and a great place to live. Come on down and check it out!
If you'd like to read more about the Pinellas Trail, click here, or here.

Dunedin Sunset on Edgewater Drive
As I finished my shooting of the homes and the trail along Edgewater Drive, I looked back one more time. This shot is the culmination of a large group I took (See Nov. 14 post below for a few of them). You can see one of the benches, with the wavy line, that are sprinkled along the biking & walking path there. I truly had no idea just how well this would come out. I knew I had to try.
It just seemed like one of those special moments. I hope you like it.

Dia de los Muertos in Dunedin?
This awesome sight can be found adorning a light pole in Downtown Dunedin. As it turns out, they have an annual "Winter Holiday Pole Decorating" contest, sponsored by The City of Dunedin and the Arts & Culture Advisory Committee. As crazy as it sounds, I like it! Here is an excerpt of what the official press release says about it all:
" The objective is to dress up Downtown Dunedin for the holidays and create a festive and sparkling, family-friendly atmosphere. Light poles are to be 'adopted' and decorated by the local merchants and organizations. The contest sponsors are seeking applicants to get into the holiday spirit and help 'dress up our city for the holidays.' "
Now I have to admit, the Dia de los Muertos theme seems to be at odds with Christmas and the Holiday Spirit, but then it is celebrated on the 1st and 2nd of November, so maybe it's not so out of sync after all?? And then, this pole IS just across the street from a Mexican restaurant!
Either way, it adds some great color and culture to an ordinary light pole! Here is a link to the Wiki entry on Day of the Dead.

Dunedin FL Downtown Pt II - Entrance
Welcome to Downtown Dunedin Florida! This welcoming entrance brings you into the area that I posted a photo of earlier. It is one of those downtown areas that has been made so welcoming and attractive that you would enjoy going for a walk here just to experience the feeling, as if all the dining and shopping choices we not even there :). But you might want to consider a Downtown Dunedin lunch while you are here! When you come to Dunedin, or the Greater Tampa Bay area, you will want to visit Dunedin's Downtown!
Logistically speaking, this area is less than a mile from the Dunedin Marina, Dunedin City Hall, Mease Dunedin Hospital, and lots of beautiful housing and Dunedin real estate (Lots of which I will be posting on this site in the future). Not to mention a wonderful waterfront trail for walking, biking or skating.

Dunedin Homes - WATERFRONT!
A beautiful example of Dunedin homes, Dunedin real estate. There are some fine, fine homes on the waterfront here. This house sits just across Edgewater Dr. from Clearwater Harbor. That is also the Intracoastal Waterway as it passes our area. Check below to see what their view is like. And yes, that's my shadow, stretching wraith-like across the road, reaching for the next good shot.
The City Of Dunedin has done a great job of making this stretch of waterfront accessible. There is a beautiful walking/biking path right at the water's edge, complete with benches and trash cans. It makes for a wonderful place to catch the sunset...
And if you are thinking relocation, this is a great place to sit and watch the boats go by.

Dunedin Loves Their Children
When I saw this sign it stopped me in my tracks. I thought how wonderful that politics and red tape did not prevent the City of Dunedin from posting this sign. And I thought, how can you not love a place that will post a sign like this?
And speaking of great communities, I am very pleased to have been accepted into the City Daily Photo Community! I look forward to sharing with and learning from the members of this awesome global community.

Veterans Day - Dunedin FL
This is a Veterans Memorial monument in Dunedin, FL. It is located at the Dunedin Marina. I could have posted a picture of a downtown street scene, or some clouds, or some kids playing, and felt the same respect and gratitude for the veterans that have served our country. Because it is all about freedom. The freedom for children to play without fear, the freedom to walk down the street enjoying a conversation with a friend, the freedom to just lie on your back in a public park and watch the clouds pass by over head. I enjoy the opportunity to live free, and to enjoy all these things and more. And I thank you, Veterans of America, who have secured this freedom for us through your sacrifice and dedication.

Dunedin Moss Draped Trees
If you love the look of moss draped trees shading quiet neighborhood streets and lanes, you might like Dunedin! There are so many varieties of neighborhoods, there is something for everyone.
Myself, I love the look. I love the feel of these streets. They seem so peaceful, so tranquil. Coming home to something like this after a day at the office is a great way to unwind. And then, living here in the center of everything that is Florida Wonderful, you get changed and head out for a taste of what makes life worth living.

Dunedin GEM!
Dunedin is so Green in so many ways! How can you not love a city that puts these totally Green, electric cars in their fleet? I came across this utility billing GEM during a lunch time walk. I am so impressed with the City of Dunedin for going this route. The meter reader had parked it on a side street while he walked through the neighborhood reading meters. This is the coolest little car. We should ALL get one!
In fact, if you'd like, click here to read more about Global Electric Motorcars. In the meantime, if you would like to see more views of how the City of Dunedin has this one setup, click on the thumbnails below for full size pictures.

More on that soon.

More Dunedin Housing?
This beauty resides at the Dunedin Marina. And although I cannot be certain that she is being used as a live aboard, it certainly is an option in this area. It really is a beautiful boat, and her name is Regard. Now, for fun, check out the name of the dinghy stowed on top of the cabin...
Or if you cannot afford a boat this nice, perhaps you could live in one of the condo's in the background. After all, you would not be living on a beautiful boat, but you would have great views of lots of beautiful boats (without all the upkeep). It is a thought, isn't it?

Sweet Home in Yellow, Dunedin, FL
Another in the Homes of Dunedin series. When I see a small home like this, with the two chairs on the front porch, or what passes for a front porch on this house, I just want to drop out of my day for a while and have a sit.
I really think we all don't do that enough. And I can tell you, our bosses don't help at all. But that is another post altogether. This is not the biggest home in Dunedin, for sure, but it is definitely one of the more peaceful looking homes. What do you think?

Sweet Home Dunedin, FL
I've noticed this cute little house for sale across the street from the pond (Lake Paloma) I walk around. It has been for sale for a while now. First it was for sale by owner, and now it is being listed by a Realtor. Not a bad little house, from the street. I believe it is 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom. Detached one car garage. They have done some updating. They are asking $188,000 for it. To me it seems a little steep, but then, around here housing costs have gone through the roof in the last few years.
But it is still a nice looking home, with a nice big tree shading the backyard. That is a real plus here in Florida. And I think this will be the beginning of a series of home and housing shots I will post here. Maybe it will give you, the reading visitor, a better idea of what Dunedin is like in person. What sort of house do you live in?

Dunedin, Florida: Lake Paloma Duck Crossing Sign
Click for larger picture in a new window
I don't know the people who put this sign up... but I like them just the same. I have observed several broods of ducklings appear around this tiny lake, Lake Paloma, only to watch sadly as their numbers dwindle. The whole lake is surrounded by streets, with only a narrow verge of bank between. So the ducks are crossing the road all the time. I am sure that many of the ducklings are lost to cats, dogs, etc... but I find hope in the sign that maybe a few less will fall victim to vehicular duck-slaughter.
On a brighter note, the weather is getting to be quite delightful around here. Finally cool enough to enjoy a walk outside. The humidity has fallen through the floor, and that is okay with me. Well, to a point. I noticed that this area is under a red flag warning due to humidity so low that wildfires are a high risk.
On a lighter note, here are a few other views of Lake Paloma that you may enjoy: ____

Dunedin, Florida: Dunedin Annual Art Harvest Art Show
Click for larger picture in a new window
Wahoo! Who loves a good art show? I DO! I DO!
Welcome to Art Harvest 2007. Featuring 233 artists from the United States and Great Britain, this is perhaps Dunedin's biggest show of the year. Over 50,000 people are expected to visit the two day event. And it is WONDERFUL. If all the awesome art was not enough, there is a food court that sends the most enticing smells drifting throughout the venue. Yummy!
If you can get to Dunedin, Florida next November... the first weekend to be specific, then you don't want to miss the Art Harvest art show. And hat's off to the Junior League of Clearwater-Dunedin for this fine show, and to the City of Dunedin for keeping it in Dunedin!!
See you there next year!
